Despite my uncanny ability to imagine scenarios far more miserable than even the worst possible outcome of any given situation, even I could not not have foreseen how poorly my apartment search would still be going at this late date, only a matter of days before my departure from the big apple. Things hit a nadir when, after unexpectedly having two different applications rejected earlier this week, I learned that being a white man leaving the building where I had just been shown a nice apartment was considered "probable cause." As one of the four different police officers surrounding me patted me down, I thought to myself, I don't know if I'm gonna have time to write a McCarthyism this week. Though I'm getting a little desperate to find a place and have my application approved, I just didn't feel comfortable needing to work being a suspect in a serious crime into my daily commute.
As a result, the search continues, and there just isn't time to blog right now, not even to reflect on the bizarre adventures I encounter along the way. I was planning on taking a break from writing this blog in the month of August anyway because I have a long reading list that I've been moving through much too slowly, so my decision to bump that break up by two weeks isn't going to hurt anything. Have a Merry August. In the United States, it is the only calendar month without any recognized holidays, probably because the Dog Days are a festival unto themselves. I'll be back in September.
